Through the Miller Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, the Miller Institute seeks to discover and encourage individuals of outstanding talent and to provide them with the opportunity to pursue their research on the Berkeley campus. Miller Fellows are appointed for three years to conduct their independent research on the UC Berkeley campus embedded within one or more STEM departments and guided by one or more faculty host(s). Miller Fellows also participate in the dynamic Miller Institute community, which provides them the opportunity to connect with, and learn from, a wide range of researchers.
The Kathryn A Day Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
The Kathryn A. Day Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship, established in 2019 by Professors Randy Schekman and Sabeeha Merchant, honors retired Chief Administrative Officer Kathy Day’s 30-year legacy at the Institute. Awarded annually, this fellowship supports outstanding early-career scientists through the three-year fellowship program, prioritizing candidates who demonstrate exceptional commitment to scientific outreach and community building. One award is granted annually.
Miller Research Professorship
The Miller Research Professorship grants UC Berkeley faculty "release" from teaching and administrative duties for an academic year to focus
exclusively on research. It is intended to allow faculty to explore new research directions or embark on major scientific projects. Miller Professors participate in Institute gatherings and gain a new appreciation for the breadth of research conducted across campus. Through their participation in the Miller community, they mentor Miller Fellows and facilitate collaboration across scientific generations.
Miller Professorships are available only to members of the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley campus. It is also required that research be conducted on the Berkeley campus. Applicants who are not members of the Berkeley faculty should seek affiliation with and a nomination through an academic department at Berkeley for the Visiting Miller Professorship Program. Awardees may not serve concurrently in a major administrative role in their department or on campus, such as Department Chair or Dean, during their professorship term.
Visiting Miller Professorship
The Visiting Miller Professorship brings distinguished scientists from other institutions to the Berkeley campus for short-term collaborations. Through this program, the Miller Institute fosters collaborative research interactions between visiting scholars and the Berkeley scientific community. Visiting Miller Professors enliven the campus and the Miller Institute community during their visits and often depart with many research directions to pursue.
The Gabor A. and Judith K. Somorjai Award is a distinguished award that supports early-career visiting scientists in the chemical sciences. One award is granted annually.
Miller Senior Fellowship
Introduced in 2008, the Miller Senior Fellowship is designed to recognize and support the most distinguished faculty currently on the Berkeley campus. Miller Senior Fellows add to the intellectual life of the Institute, specifically by mentoring and interacting with the Miller Research Fellows. Senior Fellows regularly participate in the Institute's weekly lunches and seminars, and will mentor Miller Fellows through occasional relevant functions.
Senior Fellows are selected based on their records of accomplishment, distinguished reputation and citizenry, demonstrated interest in promoting the interdisciplinary culture of the Miller Institute, and sustained campus efforts in faculty recruitment and retention. Senior Fellow appointments are made to tenured UC Berkeley faculty for one year, renewable up to five years.
