I am Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford and Visiting Professor of Statistical Epidemiology at Imperial College London School of Public Health. I study the transmission and control of infectious diseases, with an emphasis on real-time outbreak response. I work on diseases of animals as well as humans, which makes zoonotic pathogens particularly interesting as they transmit both within and between human and animal populations. Functional innovations can determine how biodiversity is distributed because they often alter the trajectory and pace of evolutionary diversification. My research explores the origins and evolutionary consequences of complex teeth, a major vertebrate innovation, in fishes. As a Miller Fellow, I will integrate comparative genomics and molecular genetics to identify the mechanisms by which tooth complexity rapidly arises at both phylogenetic and organismal scales.

Flowering plants exhibit a remarkable diversity of reproductive strategies, many of which enhance cross-pollination while balancing trade-offs between male and female function. My research explores the evolutionary origins and genetic mechanisms underlying sex-specific temporal mating strategies across diverse groups of hermaphroditic flowering plants. By integrating comparative genomics, phylogenetics, population genetic models and molecular genetics, I aim to uncover why and how these temporal strategies have evolved and are maintained over time.
